It is pretty obvious why this is my favorite piece. When I read books, I like to learn things from it or get some advice and within this book, I found both. Although most people thought McCandless was "stupid" or "careless" I found him quite inspiring. Maybe he could have saved his own life with a map, but I think he had a lot of courage to take on the Alaskan Wild on his own. Almost is a sad word, but I do think he almost made it. Even though Chris is gone, he did teach me many important life lessons within Krakaur's book.

Into My Favorite Piece
My favorite piece of literature this year is easily Into The Wild. Of course there were some uninteresting parts in the book, but overall it taught me multiple life lessons. I will probably never forget the message Chris McCandless forwarded to Ronald Franz in a letter. It was extremely inspiring considering the fact that Franz actually made a huge change to his life and actually started living the life he wanted. McCandless made it clear that taking risks or getting out of the boundaries that you have set for yourself is quite beneficial and will make you a billion times happier. It also made me realize that so many people decide to continue to live their unhappy lives because they are so used to the norm and that sense of security. Chris went on to mention that Joy does not only reside between relationships, but everywhere within us. Joy can be found throughout our experiences or daily likings. This letter made me realize that joy is everywhere and that we should not always search for it because it could end up in our hands without even noticing.

Homeland
What would I do with my "once in a lifetime" opportunity? With no money I would try to hitch hike my way to my homeland Armenia, which seems quite impossible. I would definitely need to get on a plane to get there, so I would sell my car to get there. I feel it is my responsibility to travel to my homeland and learn more about it. I have never been there, but this coming May I will finally see Armenia and get to feel the soil beneath the soles of my feet. I will not be able to contain my excitement and I will also probably get quite emotional. Anyways, once I get to Armenia I will move around to every single village and city. I will travel on foot, in cars and even boats. I will get to see and feel every single part of Armenia. I would visit every church in Armenia (which is a lot) and light a candle in each one. I would also hike within all the greenery and take in all the beautiful scenery. Not only would I completely explore Armenia, but I would also visit such neighboring countries.
In my homeland I would find old Armenian books and make memories with Armenian grandparents. I would sit down with them for hours and they would talk to me about all their experiences and what they hope for for the next generation. They would give me insight to the best places to explore and truly feel at home. For hours a day I would sit on the grass and feel my land within my hands. I would stay up all night and by three or four in the morning I would watch the sunrise. I would visit orphanages and speak to all the children there and bring them gifts. I would eat the fully fresh and organic food that Armenia offers to me and I would probably live off cheese and bread for many weeks. I would roam all around Armenia and never stay in one place because the entire nation is my home.
Pope Francis Titles Armenian Genocide as "the first genocide of the 20th century"
"Francis Uses 'Genocide' To Describe Armenian Killing, Turkey Reacts"
By: AP

Pope Francis on Sunday titled the slaughter of the Armenian Genocide "the first genocide of the 20th century" and encouraged the international community to recognize it as well. This upset and surprised Turkey, showing that they must have not been prepared for such a truthful justice. By making this statement it shows Pope Francis' true character and longing for justice. Turkey, which has always denied the obvious massacre of the nation of Armenia, immediately called upon the Vatican ambassador to complain and mentioned that the country would let out an official response later in the day. Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu responded to the Pope's statement by saying "The Pope's statement which is far from historic and legal truths is unacceptable". Pope Francis, who had a close connection to Armenia from his days in Armenia, mentioned that it was his duty to speak upon the memory of the innocent men, woman and children who were "senselessly" massacred by Ottoman Turkey. Francis' words had an immediate effect on St. Peters, where the head of the Armenian Apostolic Church, Aram I thanked the Pope for admitting it as a Genocide.
"Concealing or denying evil is like allowing a wound to keep bleeding without bandaging it". This quote by Pope Francis is connected with "Silence encourages the tormentor, not the tormented". The best advice for Turkey at this point would to accept the fact that the Armenian Genocide actually did occur and there is no way they could continue to run away from it.

China Calls On Mother Nature
"Climate Change: China official warns of 'huge impact'"
By: Charlie Ross
Source: BBC
http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-china-32006972
This climate change could have a huge impact on China by reducing crop yields and harming the significant environment, the country's top weather scientist warns. As the climate increases, so do China's issues. Zheng Guogang spoke to Xinhua news agency and told them that this climate change could be a serious threat to China's huge infrastructure projects. These new infrastructure projects are going to help China's society advance and bring a new light to their never-ending ideas towards the growth of a country. Guogang mentioned that China's temperature rises were way higher than global averages. China, which is the world's biggest polluter, said that its discharge of gases that are the main cause for climate change would peak in 2030. However, the country has not set a one target to decrease the discharging of gases, which would mainly be of carbon dioxide. Mr. Zheng, the head of China's meteorological administration, mentioned that rising temperatures exposed his country to a huge risk of climate change and climate disasters. He mentioned that China's temperature had been way over the average for the past century. China's leaders have realized this huge issue, but have not gathered up the time or effort to fix these issues or set a plan to escape from this problem. Mr. Zheng went on to say that there would be more droughts, rainstorms and higher temperatures, which would threaten river flows. This would also stop some infrastructures such as the Three Gorges Dam. "To face the challenges from past and future climate change, we must respect nature and live in harmony with it"( Zheng).

Men v Women
What is the impact of the gender roles that society creates and enforces?
Gender roles is the exact reason why women seem to be less worthy than men. The stereotypical role of the woman is to make food for their husbands and stay home. Some women actually think that their husbands are supposed to govern their lives and that they cannot be independent. That sounds ridiculous. Because of the gender roles that society has created, some women think they are not worthy enough to run a business or get into politics. Then there are the men who think that women cannot do "manly" labor such as even picking up trash. There is such a separation between men and women that it is hard to believe at times. People can do whatever as they please, but society has created boundaries and limits that are difficult to go over without being judged. There are many amazing women leaders who have impacted the world in such a way that they cannot be forgotten. Today is International Women's Day and this topic could not have been better to write about. Today all the women who made a difference and stood up for their rights are remembered. One of the quotes I always remember from an African American woman is Rosa Park's infamous "no". By standing up for her rights as a Black women she made a mark in history. By society even having gender roles destroys the whole idea of women and men being completely equal. Men and women should be able to do whatever they want, regardless of the job. It is true that society is messed up, but that can be fixed. Anything can be changed with a little unity.

The Expensive Love Story In India
"The Lavish Lifestyle of India's Royalty"
By: Rupa Jha
Source: BBC
http://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-31709924
India's royalty lost their great power when the nation gained its independence in the year of 1947. Even though the independence occurred, the modern-day maharajas are still extremely wealthy and influential and are said to throw amazing weddings. The grooms father said that the the cost does not matter in the case of a fairy-tale wedding. All sorts of beautiful and intricate items would be placed around this royal wedding that one could not even imagine. There are elephants in gold headdresses and camels with embroideries that seem too exquisite to find elsewhere. Weddings are a huge deal in Africa because its supposed to go on for a couple days and its supposed to be this grand spectacle. The one between Prince Jaideep Jadeya and Princess Shivatmika Kumar, is the first royal wedding to catch such an eye to. Guests spend a whole week before the actual wedding in the town of Rajikot, the historical family home of the twenty-three year old groom Jaideep Jadeja. His twenty-five year old bride will not even be in the same state until they meet for their wedding. Many onlookers would watch out of their balconies of the seven day festivities. There is a huge division between the rich people who can afford such expensive aesthetics and then the regular citizens who watch in awe at the various ceremonies. "I love all this. They all look so beautiful. I like the royalty because it is a part of our tradition but I would not like to marry one, says a sixteen year-old Geeta.
It is amazing to hear such stories about weddings in India and the lifestyle there. In California, there are not such traditions like that where weddings go on for seven days.

Ross's Extremely Possible Story
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VUpgmGiW8pE
In this scene, Ross and Rachel, who are married, are locked out of their apartment which their daughter Emma is in. Emma is sleeping in her crib and Rachel is scared that something might happen to her even though the chances are quite low. Ross mentions that his mother is going to be there in a minute and she has the keys, but Rachel says that she cannot wait that "long". Ross says that everything is going to be fine, because in a minute she is still probably going to be sleeping. Rachel, as a normal mother, starts to think about impractical possibilities and says that Emma could jump out of her crib. Ross responds in a sarcastic tone by saying "Can not hold her head up, but yeah jumped". Then, Rachel starts to panic and says she left the faucet on or wonders if she left the stove on. Ross mentions that the last time she cooked was 1996. When Rachel mentions that a bird could fly in through the window she left open, Ross becomes extremely sarcastic and begins his exaggerated story first by telling her a pigeon just flew into the apartment, then says it was an eagle who went on the stove and caught fire. Ross is being completely sarcastic and using his story as a way to make Rachel realize how absurd she sounds. Ross continues his story by saying that the baby jumps out of her crib and goes all the way across of the apartment to the eagle and makes the eagle angry. Ross continues by mentioning that while all of this is occurring, the faucet is overflowing, but the eagle and the baby continue to fight while swirling in a whirlpool.
Ross was being completely sarcastic during his story to calm Rachel down and tell her that in a minute it would be impossible for their baby to be in any danger. Ross uses a great deal of exaggeration when he says that their baby jumped out of their crib and began to fight with the eagle who was "caught on fire". The use of satire by Ross was effective because Rachel realized that she also was exaggerating and everything she listed seemed not likely to occur.

Extraterrestrials Have Hair Humans Cannot Even Imagine
"Scientists Speculate Extraterrestrials May Have Completely Different Hair Than Humans"

Considering the infinite amount of celestial bodies in the known universe, scientists from across the world gathered at Stanford University and released a report this week saying that any extraterrestrials may have hair completely different than humans. The researchers also mentioned that aliens could have hair with color and texture, so different than humans that no one would be able to recognize it. Astrobiologist, Jeremy Rosenwald mentioned that "We do not even have the vocabulary to describe how aliens could look with such differences". The amount of gravity or water on a planet can determine if the hair is curly or wavy. Rosenwald described the alien's hair as, "Styling beyond the human brain's capacity to conceive". Researchers used computer stimulations to try to understand how the hair would look in an area with a different or absent atmosphere. They discovered that the aliens might not only have hair that is black, brown, blonde or red, but any color on the visual spectrum or one that is completely translucent. Scientists went on to say that since humans could not even visualize how an aliens hair could look maybe they could have hair that parts horizontally across the top of their head. Astronomer Nigel Lucas mentioned that they had gathered several images on how bangs would look on an alien in a ninety-percent methane atmosphere. These aliens could be far more intelligent than us and have hair salons much more advanced than ours today.
This article has uses a great amount of satire. It is satirical in every sentence. It uses incongruity by stating that aliens have hair salons or that they could have bangs and translucent hair. These statements all sound sarcastic and absurd. An example is found in the article, "The scientists went on to suggest that because the differences between humans and extraterrestrials could extend to the fundamental building blocks of life, alien organisms may even have a head of hair that parts horizontally across the top of their head, rather than vertically at the center or to either side".

Honesty
"Everyone suspects himself of at least one of the cardinal virtues, and this is mine: I am one of the few honest people that I have ever known"(59, Fitzgerald).
Nick saw himself as an honest person maybe because he was surrounded by so many lies. Out of all the people he knew in his life, Nick saw himself as the most honest because he kept no secrets. Every other person in his life, told lies and kept secrets. Everybody to themselves, has one pleasant trait that they keep to themselves and Nick's is being incredibly honest. At this point in the novel, Nick did not know much about Gatsby, Jordan had a secret to herself, Tom was lying to Daisy and Daisy retained much to herself. This quote foreshadows the ending to this novel because it shows how Nick was alone again and how he could only rely on himself. Daisy was not even truly honest to Gatsby because she did not tell him how she was madly in love with her money as well. No one was as down to Earth as Nick was in this novel because everybody else was way over their heads. This quote brings an unforeseen importance to Nick in this book because it shows how different he is then the people that surround him. He is a loyal, smart and honest person who does not really fit in at West or East Egg. He plays a key role in every relationship in this novel. It is obvious that everybody goes to him for advice and wishes for his help because he is like the "connecting road". An example is when Gatsby wants Daisy to come to Nick's house because Nick was Gatsby's "road" to Daisy.

The Struggle of the Middle
"Obama State Of The Union Address Highlights Battle For The Middle Class"
By: Michael McAuliff, Sabrina Siddiqui
Source: Huffington Post
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2015/01/21/obama-state-of-the-union-address-_n_6471266.html
President Barack Obama's State of the Union Address seemed to call the middle class to battle and the Republicans were not happy about it. Obama mentioned the middle class at a minimum of seven times and "working" people at least nine as he called out his new proposals. The President mentioned new offers such as new child tax credits, raising the minimum wage, extending family leave and making college more affordable. Before Obama's speech was over, House Speaker John Boehner's office was directing responses, mentioning that "regulatory onslaught squeezes the very middle-class families he claims to be trying to help". This response shows that Obama seems to be doing more of the "people pleasing talk" then actually pleasing the people. He also threatened to veto what Republicans considered to be, jobs bills. The Republican Congress mentioned how hard it was to be in office for the past six years because they also felt it every day. Representative Cathy McMorris Rodgers mentioned how disappointed she was by Obama's speech because she did not hear much on how they were going to be helping the middle class. She mentioned how his speech sounded like a "rosy picture of how things are" since he was not covering how these problems were going to get fixed. Most mentioned that the speech seemed like everything else: without a solution. It is especially going to be difficult for the middle class, so there must be a way to help them in order to get this country in order, considering a majority of this country is middle class.

Ticket To Luxury
They give you no budget and they tell you to throw the most amazing party ever...so you do just that. If I were given the chance to throw the most extravagant party, I would throw it at the most luxurious hotel in the world; Burj Al Arab Jumeirah in Dubai. This party would take place in numerous locations in the hotel. The pre-party would take place at the SkyView Bar, also known as "A lavish hideaway on top of the world" which is soaring 200 meters above sea level. I would also have the Al Mahara Restaurant open to my VIP guests who will be traveling from everywhere around the world. I expect this party to be classy and luxurious, but of course extremely wild. The Al Mahara, which means "The Oyster Shell" in Arabic, has a floor to ceiling aquarium and a fine selection of the best seafood in Dubai. After the dinner at Al Mahara or the SkyView Bar, the cocktail reception will continue at the Assawan Ampitheatre. The Ampitheatre is an open air indoor venue with stunning views of the color changing Burj al Arab sail.
There will be two main locations where the party will be taking place, in order to fit all my guests. The first location will be at the 360 Lounge that is across the actual hotel and is floating on the water. It is a beautiful venue for an amazing night. Inside the venue there is enough space to fit 200 people on the dance floor and outside there is a bar that circles the entire venue. I plan to invite world class Djs to the party including Avicii, Swedish House Mafia, Major Lazer and Diplo. Across the water will be the "classy" party (Gatsby style) in the Al Falak Ballroom located in the hotel. Considering I am twenty-one by this time, drinks will be served in each location with exceptional meals imported from everywhere in the world. The Burj Al Arab would be the best location for the magnificent party I am throwing because it is the most luxurious hotel in the world with dozens of beautiful locations within it. I would be the best host at this hotel because of its extraordinary qualities.

I believe that the guest list is one of the toughest parts to hosting a party, but this time it is easy. Each of my guests, even my classmates will be receiving letters inviting them to Burj Al Arab. Coming to Dubai will not cost a single cent for my guests because everything will be taken care of. Movie stars, fashion icons, political leaders, famous singers, athletes, models and entrepreneurs will be invited from all over the world. Sleep: The Key To A Healthy Life
"Poor sleep 'early warning sign' for drink and drug issues"

Most teenagers do not think about the amount of sleep they are receiving each night because they are too busy with their social life, school and their extra curricular activities. Little do they know, that sleep plays an enormous role in everything they decide to do. Little sleep in early teenage years could be a potential warning sign for alcohol problems, illegal drug use and possible "regretful" sexual behavior. US scientists discovered that adolescents with a weak sleep pattern are more likely to push themselves into dangerous situations than adolescents who can easily "doze off". Parents should definitely be keeping an eye on their child's sleep pattern because it has a lot to do with their daily judgement on certain situations. Scientists analyzed data from over 6,500 adolescents in the United States. They kept track of their sleep patterns, and alcohol and drug use through a large nationwide survey between 1994 and 2002. The ones who could not get a good night's sleep were most likely to have alcohol and drug problems at the time. Researchers also wanted to see if this would affect their life later on. Teenagers who had a tough time going to bed at least once a week had a higher percentage of binge drinking, taking illegal drugs and engaging in sexual behavior that they later would regret. Even one extra hour of sleep would decrease the need to binge drink. "Most of the time we do not think sleep is important. But our results show sleep is a good marker of some serious later problems" (Prof Maria Wong, 1). Professor Maria Wong mentioned that parents should be more involved with their child's sleep schedule, considering the fact that sleep has a lot to do with how their day goes.
As a teenager, one realizes that sleep is much more important than previously thought. Sleep plays a huge role in everyone's life, so it is necessary we get enough of it.

The Rise of the Mafia
The American Mafia, an Italian-American organized crime network, with tasks in cities throughout the United States, especially in Chicago and New York rose to huge power during their great success in the illegal liquor trade in the 1920s Prohibition Era. During the 20th century, massive amounts of Italians moved to America in hope for a better life. In New York City, the number of Italians went from 250,000 to 500,000 immigrants and first generation Italian-Americans. During the 1920s Prohibition Era, when the 18th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution banned the "sale, manufacture, and transportation of alcoholic beverages", Italian-American gangs started the bootleg liquor business and made themselves into major criminals, skilled at smuggling, money laundering and bribing police officers. Of course the mafia found its way through the 18th Amendment because of the fact that alcohol was an essential part in their day. They jumped on the opportunity off the ban of alcohol, smuggled it and sold it in America for massive amounts of money. The mafia was either looked at as the worst organization ever or the best, but it had an important part in American history. The 1920s was the main rise for the mafia and the Prohibition was the main cause for the mafia's popularity.
There were many important mafia bosses during the 1920s including Al Capone. He had worked for Johnny Torrin, who had later handed the business to Capone. Capone earned around 60 million dollars a year, only from alcohol. He had managed to bribe important politicians and Chicago policemen, which costed him around 75 million dollars per year. Although, that is how most became successful.

"National Unity March In Paris Draws World Leaders and Crowd of Over A Million"
By: AP/HuffPost

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2015/01/11/charlie-hebdo-rally_n_6451286.html
Over forty world leaders and around 1.2 to 1.6 million marched through the heart of Paris on Sunday to show respect for the seventeen victims of three days of terror. This march claimed to be the largest demonstration in the nation's history. It was also mentioned that 3.7 million people across France were also rallying. Rallies were also planned in London, New York and Madrid, which were all attacked by al-Qaida-linked extremists including Cairo, Sydney, Stockholm, Tokyo, and elsewhere. People rally expecting a change and justice from the massacre at the satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo. French President, Francois Hollande added, "Today, Paris is the capital of the world. Our entire country will rise up toward something better". During the march, everyone remembered the employees at Charlie Hebdo, shoppers at a kosher grocery and three police officers.
The three days of terror began on Wednesday when two brothers Said and Cherif Kouachi entered the newsroom of Charlie Hebdo, killing twelve people. The Kouachi brothers admitted in saying that the attacks were planned and financed by the al-Qaida in Yemen. The Al-Qaida branch in Yemen admitted to doing the attack in respect towards the Prophet Muhammed. On Thursday, police mentioned that Coulibaly killed a policewoman in Paris and on Friday the attackers united.
Hearing these news, especially in the beginning of the year is unfortunate. To hear about the killing of twelve innocent people brings much sadness. To kill people for the innocent work that they do is unfair, no matter the reason. Those twelve people had families and only enjoyed writing in a satirical newspaper. The rallies and this massive march was to make a change and ask for justice. Everyone has a right to say what they want because freedom of speech was granted to all. Je Suis Charlie.
